Speed Racer Breaks Down At Box Office
May 11th, 2008
Speed Racer, the Wachowski Brothers’ newer version of an older cartoon, had a flat tire at the box office this weekend. TheWarner Bros. movie only made $20.2 million based on Sunday estimates. For some movies, that is good. For this movie, which cost more thatn $100 million to make, no so good.
The only bright news is that it got good exit reviews from viewers. This might help with word-of-mouth, which is one way a movie attracts viewers. Pretty much all media outlets panned the movie.
What Happens In Vegas did about the same amount of business that Speed Racer did. That movie scored very high with older women. I guess everyone took their mom’s to see it?
Iron Man, on the other hand, continued to dominate the box office with $50.5 million this weekend, with a 10-day total that now stands at $177.1 mil. What can you say? People like Robert Downey, Jr. and their superheroes!

The Wachowski bros certainly put a lot of effort into making Speed Racer… the movie overall looked and felt like a cross between anime, a kaleidoscope, that Flintstones movie, a video game and the Dukes of Hazard
